The “deferred entry of judgment” (DEJ) program allows one to swap as much as three years’ prison time for treatment at a state-approved facility.
“It was built into the system to help the first time offender, the college kid experimenting with drugs,” said former Los Angeles drug court judge Stephen Marcus, now a felony trial judge. “One is eligible so long as they have no convictions, and have never done the program before.”
If this is your first offense and there was no violence involved, you could be eligible for alternative sentencing such as diversion program, special drug court or in California, proposition 36.
