Hearsay evidence is evidence of a statement that was made other than by a witness while testifying at the hearing in question and that is offered to prove the truth of the matter stated. Evid. Code § 1200 a (The 24 exceptions in the federal rules that do not require a showing that the declarant is unavailable are listed below.  Analogous provisions in California’s Evidence Code are also noted.
